For three days in early October in Stockholm, AEG continued with its work to finalize its report with recommendations for the conference.
Claes Tingvall, chairman of the Academic Expert Group, is very pleased with the work on the preparation of the report and the nine recommendations.
– When road safety, security, climate and other sustainable development goals are combined, you get a fantastic force. And then a lot will happen, as opposed to focusing only on one area, he says.
Reduced speed in cities
The Academic Expert Group wants to reduce urban speeds to 30 kilometers per hour, unless it can be proven that a higher speed is safe.
– We want to stimulate that you can walk and ride a bicycle, without a bargaining where we have to pay with a number of lives, says Maria Krafft, Traffic Safety Director at the Swedish Transport Administration.
Greater responsibility
The Academic Expert Group points out that there´s also a questions about responsibility for road safety. Traditionally, discussions about road safety have often been about the responsibilities of governments and authorities - but more actors and factors should be involved - among other things, utility traffic, business and cities.
Procurement is an important part of the chain
There is room for improvement , for example by ensuring that road safety and sustainability become parameters in procurement. There should be quality assurance throughout the transport chain.
– Here, it is the companies' role to secure these chains themselves so that people and the environment are not harmed, says Claes Tingvall.
The report will soon be available
The nine recommendations will be completed shortly in a report and will be available on the conference web page.
– If these recommendations are followed, it is likely to halve the number of deaths in the world in a relatively short term, says Claes Tingvall.
